So wow, my vision for what 716BBS could be is actually not so far off anymore. This place seems to be off of life support, and the list of "I wish I could fix... " grows short as things are actually pretty close to fixed.
The last week and a half or so things upgraded have included:
- updated graphics & text - I redid a lot of the graphics that had been bothering me and I changed a lot of the text in the forum software to make it friendlier and more related to BBSing.
- Changed the smileys - And added a bunch. Much more fun that the smileys the SMF software came with.
    - Changed the way the page is rendered - Since the website was created back in the days when I was first learning how to make menu files and common page headers and footers, it was not very well optimized, and it tended to fall appart at different screen resolutions and bounce around a lot as you changed screen width. Now that all is a lot more stable.
- Unifying the pages - Still have a few more to go, but I went and standardized a lot of pages on the site. Especially the chat room. And I fixed up the chat room a lot. (Still a bit more to go.)
- Improved Calendar - Looks nicer, links to the rest of the site more, etc.
So, probaly one or two more weekends of work in Jan or Feb and I think I'll be able to call this thing finished and just sit back and post.

Made a lot of changes in the last 24 hours:
* I changed the general agreement text that people read before they sign up. Mostly I just took a whole bunch of crap out about how I will log your IP address and report you to the government if you commit a federal crime and all kinds of other really intense warnings that I couldn't really see myself participating in. I left in the stuff about don't spam us though.
* I added the info boxes that went along the right side of the old message boards to the new message boards. Then I started studying PHP. A lot.
* While I was studying I made a bunch more cosmetic changes.
* After I had learned a lot of PHP I made the "Recent Posts" pull from the new message boards instead of the old ones. Now the old message board posts are gradually disappearing from the list.
* About 4 YEARS ago I made a info box called "Last Logins", but I never completed the work on writing all of the cgi scripts to handle verification under the old BBS. Since the new BBS already takes care of verification for me it was pretty easy to have PHP fill in the last logins box. (Finally! It's Alive!)
* converted several other pages around the website to PHP.
I think that's enough for this weekend. I've been putting off all the other stuff I was supposed to do.
(Probably been at least a year since I've done this much programming though. It's been really fun. Code. Nap. Code. Nap. Eat. Code. etc.)

Today I integrated the user info into the design of the website (the way I had planned to 8 years ago when I first thought up the design.)
I learned quite a bit of PHP today (enough to be dangerous now), and I learned a lot about what program is where in the Simple Machines Forum software.
I added the calendar, and will replace the old calendar with the new calendar before long. If you do not want your age listed on the calendar, please remove your year of birth from your profile.
I'm sure I won't have time to work on it any more until next weekend. But I'll be in and out to post. If you know any old BBSers, please do invite them back here.

Made a bunch of cosmetic changes to the message board software and the website. Trying to get the two to look more like each other. Looks a lot better so far.
Split out a bunch of arts type forums into their own category on the boards.
Created a photo album board for anyone who wants to post pictures. (Feel free to still post them wherever else, but that's a place specifically for people who want to post and view pictures.)

since I posted any news here. Almost five years I suppose. Well... You saw it, there wasn't really any news. I reckon I could have posted "CHECK IT OUT, Spammer posts new multi level marketing strategy on the General Board!!!" or "Yo! I just deleted 56 more adult pornospams off the nostalgia bord. You can sorta see posts again."
Yeah, anyway.
NOW there is new news! ROCK! I just recently installed new message board software (I know I said I would never resort to installing software that I didn't write, but SMF forums is some really good software and I like it.) So now there are a ton of new features, and I'll be adding more as I learn more PHP.
There were no accounts under the old software and there are under the new software, so everyone will have to sign up anew. Thanks to everyone that's already signed up and posted. Good to see you all again. (And be seen).

Time is Marching on... and time... is still Marching on.
Hey. Been very busy for me lately, but I have had a little time for programming lately. Made a few modest improvements to the board software that aren't even worth mentioning. Have a few major improvements in mind that keep edging closer to the top of my to do list.
Other than that, not much new.
